Open circuit voltage OCV: The potential difference between the poles of a battery when the battery is not discharging is called the open circuit voltage. The open circuit voltage of the battery will vary according to the material of the positive and negative electrodes of the battery and the electrolyte. If the material of the positive and negative electrodes of the battery is exactly the same, then the open circuit voltage will be the same regardless of the size of the battery and how the geometric structure changes.

Depth of discharge DOD: The percentage of discharge capacity of a battery to its rated capacity during the use of the battery. This is called the discharge depth. There is a deep relationship between the discharge depth and the charging life of the secondary battery. When the discharge depth of the secondary battery is deeper, the charging life is shorter, so deep discharge should be avoided as far as possible when in use.

Energy density: The average amount of electricity emitted per unit volume or mass of a battery. Generally, under the same volume, the energy density of lithium-ion battery is 2.5 times that of nickel-cadmium battery and 1.8 times that of nickel-metal hydride battery. Therefore, under the condition of the same battery capacity, lithium-ion battery will be smaller and lighter than nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal Hydride battery.

Cycle life: After repeated charging and discharging of a rechargeable battery, the battery capacity gradually drops to 60%-80% of the initial capacity.

Over discharge: During the discharge process, if the battery exceeds the discharge termination voltage value and continues to discharge, the internal pressure of the battery may rise, and the reversibility of the active substances in the positive and negative electrodes is damaged, which significantly reduces the capacity of the battery.

Over charge: When the battery is charged, if it continues to charge after it has reached the full state, it may lead to increased internal pressure, battery deformation, night leakage and other conditions, and the battery performance will be significantly reduced and damaged.

Self discharge: A condition whereby a battery loses its charge regardless of whether it is being used or not, due to various reasons. If the unit of a month to calculate, lithium-ion battery self-discharge is about 1%-2%, NIMH battery self-discharge about 3%-5%.

Cut-off discharge voltage: When a battery is discharging, the voltage drops to a lower operating voltage at which the battery cannot discharge any more. According to different battery types and different discharge conditions, the battery capacity and life requirements are different, so the battery discharge termination voltage is not the same.
